Overview: A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step
The Oncology Medical Center was officially put into clinical use on March 1, 2013, andlaunched an independent department on July 23, 2013. At present, there are four wards including the outpatient ward, daytime Chemotherapy Center, sub-specialized ward, and radiotherapy division, with a total of 177 beds and 20 beds for daytime chemotherapy. Currently, the team is also growing, with 194 members, including 86 nurses.
The nursing team adheres to the concept of “high-technology, full-care” and patient-centered practice. It builds the team with foresight and establishes the talent training gradually and steadily. Seeking professional development, the team aims to deepen the significance of specialized nursing and improve the quality of specialized nursing.
Development: Strive for perfection and achieve excellence
With the development of nursing specialization, the nursing team has gradually achieved in-depth exploration in the aspects of intravenous therapy, pain control, palliative care and case management, and strive to transcend in nursing specialty, meeting the increasing needs of the public.
Intravenous Therapy
The Hospital set up Intravenous Therapy Group in 2013 and Intravenous Therapy Clinic in 2015, which are subordinate to the outpatient department of oncology. The team is responsible for the whole hospital's venous puncture treatment, catheter nursing problems and related nurse training, and actively carries out new technologies and new businesses. In 2018, ECG-assisted PICC catheter tip positioning was carried out in April, single-lumen and multi-lumen PICC with high-pressure resistance was carried out in May, and mid-line catheter catheterization was carried out in June 2021.
Up to now, the nursing team of the oncology department has nine nurses for intravenous catheterization and three nurses for intravenous therapy. In the future, we will work together to safeguard the lives of patients.
Pain Control
In November 2014, the Oncology Medical Center was rated as the “Demonstration Ward for Standardized Treatment of Cancer Pain in Guangdong Province”.We have established a series of standardized systems, including the management of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances, cancer pain treatment, medical staff training, patient health education and follow-up. According to statistics, after the establishment of the standardized cancer pain demonstration ward, the pain control rate within 48 hours after admission was 96.93%. At the same time, through the driving and demonstration effect of the cancer pain demonstration ward, the standardized diagnosis and treatment level of cancer is constantly improved, and the quality of life of cancer patients is improved.
Nursing of Radiotherapy
The Radiotherapy Department is equipped with the most advanced radiotherapy equipment in Shenzhen. With the multi-functional radiotherapy plan of cutting-edge technology, it has accurate stereotactic radiotherapy technology, namely “radiation knife”, and a three-dimensional rear-mounted brachytherapy system. The Department has introduced the tumor radiotherapy team of Professor Brian O'Sullivan from the Margaret Cancer Center of the University of Toronto. In July 2021, the second linear accelerator was officially put into use. At present, the third linear accelerator TOMO is also being introduced. TOMO is one of the most advanced radiotherapy machines and the first one in Shenzhen.
Palliative Care
The Oncology Medical Center has set up a palliative care team with multi-disciplinary cooperation of doctors, nurses, social workers, etc. At the same time, the hospice care service standards in palliative wards have also been established. Now, there are 15 hospice nurses on the nursing team. We provide whole-person care for patients and their families through a variety of activities, including dance, knowledge lectures, symptom care, spiritual care, grief counseling and so on. We can not change the length of life, but can increase the density of life.
Oncology Specialist Nursing
The development of a specialist nursing team aims to provide systematic and integrated nursing for cancer patients by using professional nursing procedures. The department has trained six specialist nurses and carried out specialist case management services. Case administrators provide holistic care for patients by following up the treatment in the whole process, communicating with doctors, nurses, and patients in time, coordinating and integrating resources, so as to ensure the treatment effect.
Team Building-Work in harmony and unite for the common goal
The Nursing Team of Oncology Medical Center aims to reserve talents in the fields of intravenous therapy, hospice care, tumor nursing, nutrition support, case management every year, and gradually optimize its team building, so as to lay the foundation for building the nursing brand and maintain the consistence between talent training and department development.
