Nursing team of Department of Surgery
Under the leadership of Nursing Department, the nursing team of Surgery Department has integrated the essence of the nursing culture in Shenzhen and Hong Kong, and after 10 years of operation, formed a unique new model of holistic nursing and built an academic, professional, standard nursing team. The Department of Surgery has seven nursing unitswith 296 open beds and a total of 130 nursing staff members, including one senior head nurse, seven ward head nurses, 19 advanced nurse practitioners, 89 registered nurses and 15 nurses under standardized training.
Standardized management in line with law and regulations
We have established a perfect three-level nursing management structure, formed management standards for surgical wards, and promoted the development of nursing management. In order to better guide the work of clinical nurses, we have formed more than 230 documents based on evidence-based practice. We actively carry out CQI projects ranging from fall prevention, surgical handover, specimen collection, position management to simplifying workflow and ensuring patient safety. The projects have won awards at the hospital- and municipal-level many times.
Specialized focus to create an excellent specialty
The nursing team has established a professional and excellent wound care team. There are three international wound care therapists and 40 personnel who have completed the wound training course held by the Hong Kong Association of Fistula Therapists. They have become the backbone of the wound care team, and carried out nurse-led stratified management of surgical wounds since 2015. The wound care team is responsible for the consultation and treatment of difficult and complex wounds at the Hospital. A chronic wound care clinic was established in 2016. In 2017, the first comprehensive lymphedema treatment clinic for breast surgery in Shenzhen was opened.
The team keeps up with medical development and keeps honing specialized nursing skills. It has excelled in perioperative nursing support for such difficult surgeries as ALLPPS staged hepatectomy (liver resection), “unmasking surgery ” (Resection of nasopharyngeal tumors from maxillary external rotation approach), intracranial artery bypass, combined endoscopic thoracoabdominal radical resection of esophageal cancer, radical cystectomy, free skin flap transplantation, and cryoablation for breast cancer. It has also carried out the clinical pathway of stoma care, standardized pain management and diet management, practiced the concept of ERAS accelerated rehabilitation surgery, and pioneered the use of domestic leading digital chest drainage, etc. The team has made great strides in the field of specialist care.
Cohesive cooperation and integrated growth
With the core competencies of nurses in mind, the team aims to cultivate nurses' critical thinking in clinical nursing from different perspectives. It has implemented new teaching concepts that combine clinical practice and other advanced concepts in the world, and has carried out activities such as workshops involving participatory teaching, objective and structured clinical examination (OSCE), along with ward round. The goal is to improve nurses' comprehensive clinical competency and core teaching abilities. It has trained a total of 11 nurses in specialties including wound ostomy, advanced surgery, lymphedema, urology, otorhinolaryngology. Among them, a nurse was certified by “The First Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Specialty Nursing Program" in 2018. More than 20 provincial and municipal continuing education programs were held to provide learning and exchange platforms for nurses to further promote the development of medical-surgical nursing.
Care and respect
The team practices the concept of “care and respect”, and builds a good nurse-patient relationship. It actively carries out various forms of health education to promote the early return of patients to their families and society. Through activities such as "Public Education on Breast Cancer in the Greater Bay Area", "First Aid at Home for Patients with Myasthenia Gravis", and "Rose House for Stoma Care", it has built a platform to answer questions and solve problems for patients. Since 2015, the Hospital has held annual cleft lip and palate mission events, and so far, it has provided free surgical treatment for more than 240 children from 27 provinces and cities across the country.
Scientific Research
Scientific research is the source of nursing staff to improve nursing quality, and is an effective way to strengthen the construction of nursing team, in order to accurately help the surgical nursing team to break through the bottleneck, and improve the nursing research ability and clinical writing quality. Every year, the Department of Surgery selects key nursing researchers to participate in evidence-based training and actively participate in evidence-based group activities at the Hospital. As a young nursing team, in recent years, it has made achievements in paper publication and patent application, which lays the foundation for high-quality nursing and scientific research innovation.
