THE University of Hong Kong-Shenzhen Hospital (HKU-SZH) has partnered with a medical team from the Princess Margaret Cancer Center, which is affiliated with the University of Toronto in Canada, to improve the medical services at the hospital’s clinical oncology center, according to a press release from the hospital yesterday.

As part of Shenzhen’s “3R Project” for introducing top-notch medical experts and resources to the city, the cooperation between the HKU-SZH and the Princess Margaret Cancer Center will be rolled out on different levels to improve clinical services, personnel trainings and research related to cancer treatment on both sides.

The hospital will be closely working with a medical team led by Prof. Brian O’Sullivan from the cancer center in four fields, namely quality control of radiotherapy, research on radiotherapy, conversion of nasopharyngeal cancer, liver cancer and head-and-neck tumors.

Medical experts from Prof. O’Sullivan’s team will come to the HKU-SZH on a regular basis to exchange experiences and medical achievements with doctors at the hospital’s clinical oncology center.

The HKU-SZH also announced its cooperation with Karolinska Institute in Sweden during a ceremony held at the hospital Monday.

A medical team led by Prof. Kristina Gemzell-Danielsson, chair of obstetrics and gynaecology at Karolinska Institute, will partner with the hospital’s reproductive medicine center to improve clinical services and research related to sexual and reproductive health care on both sides.

The hospital’s reproductive medicine center has provided assisted reproduction therapy for over 2,600 patients since it was launched in October 2015. The pregnancy rate of women who have received “test-tube baby” treatment at the center is 54.5 percent.

The center also worked with Queen Mary Hospital in Hong Kong in 2015 to help a Shenzhen woman, surnamed Li, give birth to healthy twin babies through embryo selection by using preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) technology.
