  • Gynecology & Obstetric Clinic

The Department of Gynaecology and Obstetrics, HKU-Shenzhen Hospital, works closely with The University of Hong Kong which has more than a century’s experience in clinical service. We adopt a modern paradigm in the running of health care service.

The Department emphasizes on effective communication between staff members as well as good doctor-patient communication to ensure high quality medical service. We aim at keeping our clinical practice up to international standard, and hence we are advocate of evidence-based medicine and take reference from international clinical management guidelines. We do not support treatment options without proper scientific basis.  In this regard, our practice may differ from some other hospitals in mainland China.

Our Hospital adopts an appointment system. This tries to benefit patients by reducing their waiting time for consultation in the hospital, and ensure adequate contact time between each patient and the doctor. Patients are not supposed to choose a particular doctor. Follow-up appointments and bookings for operation can be made immediately after the consultation.

  • General Gynaecology

Team Head: Professor Hextan Yuen-Sheung NGAN

The Gynaecology Specialist Out-Patient Clinic of HKU-Shenzhen Hospital offers consultations and treatment for common as well as complicated gynaecological conditions.  Currently we have also commenced on out-patient procedures such as colposcopy, loop electrosurgical excisional procedure for cervical diseases, diagnostic hysteroscopy, gynaecological ultrasound scan etc.  For induced abortion service in our Hospital, we are now mainly providing surgical termination of pregnancy under local anaesthesia for first trimester pregnancies, and are planning to provide at a later stage medical abortion for first and second trimester pregnancies.  For in-patient operations, currently we can perform various gynaecological operations by open and minimally-invasive approach (hysteroscopic and laparoscopic operations); these include laparoscopic ovarian cystectomy, salpingo-oophorectomy, myomectomy, total and sub-total hysterectomy, as well as other minor operations of the female genital tract.  Our Department also provides in-patient care for women suffering from acute gynaecological conditions.  When needed, we will also provide inter-disciplinary consultations to other specialties of the Hospital.  After the first consultation, patients may be arranged for follow-up or referral to other specialties / sub-specialties as indicated.

  • Urogynaecology

Team Head: Dr. Cecilia Willy CHEON

Pelvic floor organ prolapse and urinary incontinence are common health problems affecting women.  Pelvic floor organ prolapse refers to the descent of the pelvic floor organs (uterus, vagina, bladder and/or rectum) from their usual anatomical positions because of laxity and loss of support, so that the women may experience dragging sensation or mass protruding from the introitus.  Common types of urinary incontinence include: urinary stress incontinence, urge incontinence and urinary frequency.  The Gynaecology Unit of the HKU-Shenzhen Hospital runs a urogynaecology service to provide medical care for women suffering from the above problems.  Consultation procedures include: history taking, gynaecological examination, urinary diary keeping, urodynamic studies etc.  Treatment options will depend on the symptoms and assessment results, and may include pelvic floor exercise, bladder training, use of vaginal pessary, medication or surgical operation.
  • Gynaecological Oncology

Team Head: Professor Hextan Yuen-Sheung NGAN

Gynaecological Oncology is another area of excellence of our Department. Our Gynaecological Oncology team is internationally renowned for our work in clinical management and research on cervical cancer, endometrial cancer, ovarian cancer, lower genital tract malignancies and gestational trophoblastic diseases. With the establishment of the Clinical Oncology Centre of the HKU-Shenzhen Hospital, our Gynaecological Oncology Team will serve as a multidisciplinary tertiary referral centre providing multiple modalities of treatment for the above diseases, including surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy, as well as palliative and hospice care.  Furthermore, minimally invasive surgical treatment for various female genital cancers (such as robotic surgery for cervical cancer, laparoscopic treatment for endometrial and cervical cancers, and staging operation for early-stage ovarian cancer) will be another flagship of our service.
